Girls Take Flight Graduation

This October we celebrated the graduation of another cohort of Girls Take Flight at EIS! After months of training, studying, and exploring the world of drone aviation, they have graduated. These high school girls are now FAA certified drone pilots. We are so proud of them!

Thank you to our instructors Kitrina Carr, Desi Ekstein, and Shyanne Smith who continue to shatter the glass ceiling! And thank you to our funders who made this year’s program possible. They help EIS provide free and low cost STEM programming to Southeast San Diego. Thank you American Association of University Women, The Boeing Company, BAE Systems, General Atomics, Macy’s, Northrop Grumman Corporation, and San Diego Gas & Electric.

Girls Take Flight is Going to Africa

One of our amazing partners, Genetic Legacy is taking the ultimate field trip across the Atlantic to bring history to life with drones.

During Thanksgiving week 13 girls, 5 of which are Girls Take Flight/ EIS Alumna, will spend 8 days in Accra, Ghana, with African high school girls combining drone data collecting with traditional research to expand historical narratives involving the transatlantic slave trade.

They are flying LIDAR units in order to map parts of the “last bath”. The last bath is a historical site in Ghana where enslave people were taking to their last bath before wither being sold into slavery or killed.

Our Genetic Legacy hopes to map many more parts of the transatlantic slave trade, including places in the UK and USA, in order to recover BIPOC history that is not often told/ recorded. We can’t wait to share about their trip in an upcoming newsletter.

We can hardly wait to share about their experience!
