Hispanic Heritage Month: Vanessa Montano & Karen Marmolejo
This year’s theme for Hispanic Heritage Month is Unidos: Inclusivity for a Stronger Nation. The theme seeks to ensure diverse voices and ideas are included in the future of our communities and nation. To help celebrate, we are highlighting two local Latina STEM professionals; engineer Karen Marmolejo and scientist Vanessa Montano who both work at Illumina. Illumina is a global biotech and genomics company that started here in San Diego. Both Karen and Vanessa were guest speakers in our STEAM summer camp. They led a fun and engaging discussion about DNA and the future of genomics.
Karen Marmolejo is a Supplier Quality Engineer for New Product Introduction. This job entails many aspects such as managing the manufacturing process of products and looking for defects, promoting innovative ways to improve products, and ensuring regulatory compliance. This work also requires communication skills, teamwork, and critical thinking. Karen’s favorite part of her job is working with brilliant people all over the world. When not at work, she likes yoga, meditation, and traveling. Her high school AP Biology teacher encouraged her to pursue engineering. Karen’s advice for youth is “Remember that the most important part of STEM is being able to communicate with others your thoughts, whether it be in writing or in-person; be comfortable in public speaking, collaborating with others and writing.” Karen was born in Mexico, is a first generation college graduate, and the first in her family to have a second degree. She earned her B.S. in General Biology from UCSD and M.S. Quality Assurance from CalState Dominguez Hills.
Vanessa Montaño-Machado is a Senior Scientist from Mexico who studied both science and engineering in college. She was inspired to pursue a STEM career by her high school chemistry teacher. Her interest began with learning about the living systems through chemistry and biochemistry. Since then, her greatest motivation has been to help improve the quality of life for others. Vanessa’s most rewarding part of her work is listening to physicians and patients who have benefited from the technologies developed at work. Her advice for youth is “Remain curious, take advantage of all the information you have with a click online. However, very important, make sure to consult pages of Universities and other trustable sources. Look for activities that could help you learn more and find the area in which you are interested. There are so many exciting things to do in the field!” Vanessa earned her B.S. in Chemistry from Tecnológico de Monterrey, México and M.S. in Biochemistry, Cergy Pointoise University, France. PhD in Materials Engineering, Laval University, Canada.

Meet EIS Instructors Asma Hussein and Audrea Cain!
EIS is fortunate to have so many passionate STEM instructors to teach and be role models for the diverse youth of our community. This month we are introducing two of the many wonderful instructors who helped make our 2022 STEAM Summer Camp a fun, engaging, and safe experience.
Asma Hussein is a local San Diegan, from City Heights who started as an EIS instructor in 2021. She is currently working on a Master of Science in Biochemistry at UCSD. Her career path for now is to pursue biomedical research. “I really like teaching about science and watching other students get engaged and interested in science.” In her free time her favorite hobby is being outdoors- hiking, observing nature, and visiting the beach.
Audrea Cain is also a local San Diegan who started as an EIS instructor in 2021. She is currently a pre-medical student in San Francisco State University’s Pre-Health Post-Bac Program. Her career goal is to become a pediatrician with the aspiration to have a positive impact on the health of youth in underserved communities. “My favorite part about working at EIS is seeing my students’ interest in the sciences grow right before my eyes. It is such a rewarding feeling when I ask a question about a subject I’m teaching and every single student raises their hand up excitedly, ready to answer.” When not working or in school, one of her hobbies is exploring different mediums of art. Lately she has been really into sculpting with clay.

EIS seeks passionate STEM educators from STEM-related fields to help lead after-school, weekend, and school-break learning labs for students in grades 2-8. EIS Volunteer Opportunities
We are looking for high school volunteers who want to hone their communication skills, develop leadership skills, and support STEM education opportunities for communities who are most underrepresented in STEM.
Teen Lab Assistants will be expected to volunteer weekly for a selected shift from September through December. There will be one day of orientation and training prior to the beginning of classes. Teen Lab Assistants will be assigned to a 3-4 hour shift on Thursdays or Saturdays for 10 weeks. Teen Lab Assistants will have frequent contact with students and instructors. Teen Lab Assistants will meaningfully aid our work to improve STEM learning and fun experiences for children in ages 7-14.

The Mathemagician Homework Club Return October 1st!
If you would like to participate, email info@mathemagiciansclub.com. Include your email, your child’s grade, and math concepts they are working on (or share an attachment of their homework). Mentors will offer help, more practice problems or worksheets. This includes SAT math help as well. They will monitor this email daily so you don’t have to wait until Saturday to ask for help.
